How to Workout Your Skin

We all know the importance of working out our muscles. Not only does it help prevent sagging, bagging and an otherwise aged appearance, it also helps us maintain overall health. Well, the same goes for our skin.

Yes, it is possible to workout your skin, and trust me you’ll be thankful you did. By workout, I don’t mean squeezing and releasing your facial muscles. I’m talking about corrective facials. For all of you facial-adverse men out there, think of these treatments more as a workout than an effeminate pampering session.

	What is a Facial Workout?

Effective facials will essentially workout your face, not just clean out pores and scrub away dead skin. These facials will go beyond the surface, to remove damaged layers of skin, increase circulation and repair the tissue.

When looking for a facial, be sure to ask about what it entails. A facial workout should include:

Cleanse – a cleanser with salicylic and/or lactic acid will provide antioxidant and antibacterial support. Typically a vapor of steam will help deepen the cleanse.

Exfoliate and Tone – this can be physical exfoliators (scrubs) or acids and enzymes. It will digest dead cells and signal the cell renewal process to begin. If a scrub is used, it should be worked into the skin with a manual massage. The enzyme or peel formula will follow, and might include pepsin and papain or sake rice wine.

Increase circulation– this might include a mask with peptides, vitamins and minerals to correct the skin, oxygenate and detoxify the cells.

Repair – skin-building ingredients, including peptides, stone extracts like hematite, and antioxidants will again be massaged into the skin. This is essentially like drinking a protein shake after your workout to repair strained muscles.

Of course every good facial should end with sun protection too, preferably a natural blocker like zinc.

So there you have it – a workout for your skin. A bonus side effect of the facial workout is it typically involves massage of your face, shoulders and upper back, so you will likely leave the treatment room feeling extremely relaxed and distressed.

What Powerful Antioxidant is Essential to Skin Health?

We’ve all heard about the power of antioxidants, but do you really know what exactly they do? Well they essentially help protect the body, inside and out, from aging and cell degeneration by inhibiting oxidation and inflammation, and preventing free-radical damage.

The health and skin care community is constantly on the look for new sources of antioxidant molecules and ways to use them. One of the most potent natural antioxidants discovered, according to research conducted in the early ‘90s, is boldine. Even the name sounds powerful.

So what exactly is it and how does it work?

	What It Is

Boldine (aka pemus boldus) is an alkaloid found in the Chilean boldo tree. The leaves of the boldo tree have traditionally been used in folk medicine for its cell-protective properties. Today it’s used in a number of medicinal and herbal remedy applications for its anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and cyto-protective (cell-protective) properties.

It prevents lipid peroxidation, in which free radicals steal electrons from lipids resulting in cell damage (aka aging). Boldine also inhibits intra-cellular oxidants, fights bacteria and enhances the body’s natural “killer cells” when fighting certain cancers and tumors.

This is just a glance at what boldine does for our cells, and keep in mind it does this for all cells including our skin cells.

	How It Works

In skin care you will commonly see boldine as “D-boldine.” This is the chirally correct form of the molecule, which means it will interacts more efficiently with the cell. As I said the powerful antioxidant provides all of the afore mentioned benefits to all of our cells…including skin cells.

Because of its anti-inflammatory, UV protection and free-radical scavenging properties, it essentially fights the signs of aging, and prevents collagen breakdown and loss of skin elasticity (saggy skin). Be on the lookout for this all-important defender of the cells in your skin care products.

How the Earth Keeps our Skin Healthy

What does Earth Day and skin care have in common? Quite a bit actually. The Earth provides a number of ingredients that help us maintain healthy skin and inhibit the signs of aging.

What are these amazing ingredients you ask? Well this blog post would turn into an encyclopedia collection if I listed all of them. Instead I will provide a glance at some of the most interesting ingredients being used today and what they do for our skin.

Bentonite Clay– derived from volcanic ash deposits in marine environments, this clay works to draw toxins out of the skin and absorb oils.

Blue Agave– a succulent plant that delivers antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties to the skin, which makes it extremely useful in face cleansing formulas. It also softens and soothes skin that may have gotten too much sun.

Chlorophyll– we all learned about chlorophyll in elementary school, but this ingredient which is found in all plants, algae and cyanobacteria, gives our skin antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial support to help combat acne and other impurities.

Hematite– a mineral form of iron oxide typically found in massive deposits near standing water or mineral hot springs, as well as volcanic areas. It stimulates protein production to tone and strengthen the skin.

Vitamins– there are a number of vitamins that greatly benefit our skin and we have the Earth to thank for those vitamins. To name a few, vitamin C scours for and destroys reactive oxidizing agents, vitamin E fights destructive free radicals, which have been linked to aging, and of course vitamin A and D also help maintain a youthful appearance.

Zeolite– a natural mineral from volcanic ash that traps toxins and impurities. It also increases the skin’s immunity and stimulates blood circulation.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO)– a natural mineral derived from the Earth’s crust, it acts as a protective and reflective shield for the skin against damaging UV rays. It’s also non-irritating and non-allergenic.

So be sure to celebrate the Earth this April 22 (and all year), it does after all provide us with some of the best ingredients to take care of our skin.

What is a Renaissance Man of Skin Care?

A recent Huffington Post article about the surge in the male skin care market suggested men who care about their skin should no longer be called “metrosexuals,” but “Renaissance men.” After looking at the definition of a Renaissance man – a universal person who develops skills in all areas of knowledge, physical development, social accomplishments and the arts – it seemed a fitting designation.

Men who care about their skin tend to seek knowledge about their skin and the products they are putting on it. And rightly so…since there is so much information widely available today about which ingredients and product formulations work best with men’s skin.

Gone are the days of borrowing mom’s face cream from time-to-time and calling that your skin care regimen. We now know our skin tends to be thicker, more sensitive and produce more sebum (oil). And, thanks to shaving we also have to combat ingrown hairs, dryness and razor burn.

Our testosterone also has an impact. It stimulates the production of sebum and toughens hair in the follicle, which means for any ingredients or products to be effective, it is important they address the sebum, hair and sensitivity factors, as well as our thicker skin and lower pH level.

Many studies also show us men have a higher incidence of skin cancer. That’s not because we are more susceptible to it, but we simply aren’t using sun protection. To boot, not all sun protection formulas are created equal. In fact, some of the chemical-based formulas can actually be quite hazardous to the skin. Natural blockers like zinc are generally better for our skin.

For these reasons alone it’s important for us to be Renaissance men of skin care. Not only so we can stave off the aging effect for as long as possible, but also so we know what exactly we are putting on our skin. For all of you Renaissance men of skin care out there…keep it up!

Why Proper Digestion Leads to Healthy Skin

We all know the importance of digestion for a properly functioning body, but does it play a role in the health of our skin? It most certainly does! In fact, our skin is, and should be, continually digesting. This is what helps prevent skin from looking aged.

But as we get older the digestion process slows. Enter peptides. There are many strands of peptides, each classified by the number of amino acids it has within its sequence. Each also performs a different function. In a nutshell, peptides have the ability to reduce and freeze wrinkles, help regenerate and strengthen the skin, and prevent damage.

	What They Are

The word peptide originates from the Greek term “peptos”- literally “to digest.” Peptides are made of individual amino acids linked together like a chain. They have the same chemical structure as proteins, but are shorter in length. Peptides come in various sizes and are named based on the number of amino acids in their respective chain. For example, ogliopeptides have 2-10 amino acids, polypeptides have 10-100 amino acids, and so on. Have I bored you yet?

While there are many different peptides, a few notables to look for include:

Palmitoyl Tripeptide– a small peptide that mimics the human body’s ability to produce collagen. It actually stimulates collagen synthesis, actively removes wrinkles, and has skin-firming and moisturizing properties. This peptide has also been considered an effective alternative to collagen injections – in case any of you out there are thinking of Botox.

Dipeptide– a small peptide that mimics the polypeptide found in the venom of the Templer Viper. It works to reduce wrinkles from forming by inhibiting muscle contractions. This amazing peptide is in the RAW Mineral Freeze.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide– a tripeptide that enhances the production of natural skin molecules like collagen and glycosaminoglycans. It thickens and restores flexibility in the skin.

So be on the lookout for peptides…they could help turn back the hands of time.

How to Care for Skin if You’re a Runner

Marathons, triathlons and the like take a toll on the body, but they can also wreak havoc on the skin. The harsh environments, sweat and sun can deplete the skin of nutrients, damage its structural integrity, and cause breakouts.

So how do you prevent these unwanted effects from occurring without giving up your sport? A simple regimen – protect, cleanse, rebuild, protect (again) – should do the trick.

Protect – Keep in mind the sun (the damaging UVA and UVB rays) causes 90 percent of our skin’s aging. Use a good daytime protection formula with a mineral blocker like zinc to also help protect against toxins and pollutants. Zinc acts as a natural barrier actually blocks the sun’s rays, rather than absorbing them like many chemical-based formulas do. You should apply it everyday, but especially before an outdoor run. The EnviroProtect is particularly nice for runners since it is a light, non-greasy formula that absorbs into the skin.

Cleanse daily– With strenuous workouts or excessive heat the body naturally sweats and oil emerges. Excess oil production is often the culprit behind most skin problems, and is the most common contributor to acne. A good cleanser with salicylic acid will help keep oil in check and keep acne-prone skin clear. It will also rid the skin of any other impurities from the sweat. For quick clean-up jobs after sweating turn to cleansing pads. These are super convenient, and for the guys who wear hats or helmets, they’re great for cleaning up the forehead to prevent breakouts.

Rebuild and hydrate – Use a skin-building toner with peptides, sodium hyaluronate and stone extract to strengthen and hydrate the skin. This will replenish the skin with the necessary antioxidants and proteins it needs for cell regeneration…sort of like fuel for the skin.

Protect again – No, your eyes are not fooling you. You do have to protect again…everyday as a matter of fact!

Just like you take the proper measures to protect your body (the right running gear and shoes) and replenish during and after the run, you also need to do the same for the skin.

How Important is Cleansing, Really?

Some of us do it religiously; some of us never do it, and some of us rely on the daily shower to do the trick. I’m talking about washing your face. This process may seem pretty rudimentary, but it is in fact the most important part of skin care.

Skipping over a good face cleaning each day can cause build-up in the pores, which often translates to dull skin and breakouts, and typically renders any other products you apply to your face useless.

	Unclean cleansing practices

Most of us under cleanse and over moisturize, piling ingredients on the skin. Those of us who do cleanse typically don’t cleanse long enough. Cleansers need to be massaged into the skin giving it a chance to work into the pores and release residue. Similar to that lasagna dish with baked on cheese and sauce, it has to be soaked before that stuff will come off.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but trust me your face will thank you. Here are a few quick tips for proper cleansing:

Cleanse daily – keep in mind this is the most important step in skin care

Apply a small amount of cleanser with moistened hands

Cover the entire face and neck, and work it into a lather

Re-wet hands and continue massaging into the skin for 1 to 2 minutes

Use warm water, a white cotton cloth or gauze to remove cleanser (don’t just splash water on your face)

Wipe away cleanser with light pressure

Rinse the cloth and wipe skin again. There shouldn’t be any residue visible on the cloth.

That’s it! Not too bad right?

If you’re more of a visual learner, we also have a video on how to clean your face. Let us know how you’re doing with your cleansing. Are you noticing a difference?

Take Me Out for a Spa Day

If you’re in to baseball (or the beautiful weather in the spring this time of year) chances are you are either closely following the spring training games or you may even be headed out to a game or two.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this is a good of time as any to remind you about the importance of using sunscreen. I know, as men, we’re immune to just about anything, but remember men experience the highest rates of skin cancer because we’re simply not using sunscreen.

Keep in mind too; UVA and UVB rays are responsible for 90 percent of our skin’s aging. Read that one more time. Yes, the sun is linked to those lines around the eyes and mouth, the deep lines on the forehead, brown spots, and sagging skin.

If you are using or plan to use sunscreen, there are just a few things to keep in mind:

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Look for formulas that protect against both UVA and UVB rays (these will be labeled “broad spectrum”).

Labels like “waterproof” and “sweat proof” the FDA is now calling “exaggerations of performance.” So don’t be fooled.

Sunscreens can’t claim to provide more than two hours of protection without reapplication.

Applying sunscreen once in the morning doesn’t cut it. If you are going to be exposed to sunlight throughout the day, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., you need to reapply every couple of hours.

One last thing to keep in mind, the sun alone doesn’t cause damage while you are outside. In addition to the rays beating directly on your skin, the sun reflects off sand, water, concrete, pavement to cause double the damage.

On a much lighter note, if you will be in Arizona for spring training, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity for some R and R. The lazy days at the ballpark combined with the very generous deals offered by local area resorts and spas, and the beautiful weather creates the perfect storm for the ultimate recharge. Check out FireSky Resort and Spa or the Camelback Village Racquet and Health Club for the RAW Man Facial. Both are near several of the ballparks.

Check out the RAW EnviroProtect for more information on sunscreens.

What do soybeans have to do with healthy skin?

Who would have thought a tiny bean could hold so much nutrition? We’ve all heard of soybeans as an ideal source of protein, among other health benefits, but it’s also an incredibly powerful skin care ingredient.

Soybean (aka glycine soja) protein is commonly used in skin care for its protection and prevention abilities, and highly moisturizing properties. Since it is a protein, it also assists in the fight against aging.

We’re not suggesting you take up eating tofu on a daily basis…there are alternatives.

	What It Is

The soybean is a species of legume native to eastern Asia, but today the beans are a global crop. Since they are considered a complete protein – and for many years during tough times were used as a primary source of protein – soybeans are now cultivated in many countries around the world.

In skin care purposes glycine soja protein is derived from soybean amino acids. It’s rife with proteins, minerals and vitamins, which nourish and fortify skin tissues, and it is commonly used to re-condition, strengthen and smooth the skin, and prevent over drying (dry, chapped skin is no fun).

	How It Works

Since glycine soja protein is an antioxidant and MMPI (Matrix Metallpoprotease Inhibitor), and helps defend against skin aging by inhibiting skin matrix breakdown. Too scientific? In other words soybean protein helps prevent cell structures (and collagen) from breaking down, which ultimately leads to the appearance of aged skin.

Soybean protein is an extremely effective source of hydration, which protects from excessive dryness. And as I mentioned before, it is a notable ingredient in fighting the signs of aging. What more could you ask for?

Since the skin easily absorbs glycine soja protein, the ingredient also assists in the absorption of other vital nutrients.

Find glycine soja protein in Buffed, Complex VI, Lip Guard, and Mineral Freeze.

How Chlorophyll Promotes Healthy Skin

I’m about to take you back to your grade school science class with a lesson on chlorophyll. That’s right boys and girls the green pigment essential to photosynthesis is also good for our skin.

Chlorophyll is vital to plant life, so it would make sense that it can reap rewards for our skin too. And don’t worry you won’t turn bionic green like the humanoid Hulk if you use it.

	What It Is

Chlorophyll is found in all plants, algae and cyanobacteria. It allows plants to absorb energy from light via photosynthesis. In the electromagnetic spectrum it absorbs light primarily in the blue portion, followed by the red. Incidentally it is a poor absorber of green portions, which is why tissues containing chlorophyll are green. In other words, rather than absorb green and near-green light, it reflects it, which is why we see the green hue.

The green pigment is referred to as the lifeblood of plants and ultimately humans and animals since plants are at the foundation of much of our food supply. Chlorophyll is classified as a chlorin pigment and its center comprises a magnesium ion.

It’s used as a natural colorant in food, beverages and other products, and has also been known to eliminate bad breath and overall body odor when ingested.

	How It Works

In research studies, chlorophyll has been shown to decrease DNA damage, and help prevent and treat certain types of cancer – though this is still in the early stages of research. Scientists and nutritionists however, have touted chlorophyll for its health benefits for many years.

As it relates to your skin, chlorophyll is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent, which means it can help combat acne and other impurities. It also fights free radicals – the devious elements that have been linked to skin aging.

Using chlorophyll in your skin care products is one way to help boost skin health. You can also find it in food sources like kale, spinach, collard greens, wheatgrass and sprouts to name a few. But if the thought of eating something that tastes like a fresh-cut lawn smells, then be sure to look for chlorophyll in your skin care products.
